Between morality and courage
Asghar Farhadis, "Nader and Simin, a separation"

Asghar Farhadi is one of the few living filmmakers in Iran, which can show their work abroad. His drama "Nader and Simin - a separation," the Berlinale competition film in 2011, offers a rare glimpse into the everyday life of Iranian families.

Simin wants to go abroad - with her daughter Termeh. She longs for freedom and a better life. But Nader wants his demented father did not leave her alone. The story of Nader and Simin unfolds in miniature - and it tells much more of the constraints of a repressive society in the state system of Iran. "The people in my film are beings who want to leave the traditions behind them," said the director Asghar Farhadi, "and longing for renewal and a modern life. You have the traditionalists against. It is a war of tradition against modernity ".

Interior Views of a theocracy

Simin and Nader are caught in the Iranian system.

And in the middle is the religion that permeates the private. Instead Simin maintains the devout Razieh Nader's father. Razieh is overwhelmed: the household, the father, religious conventions - and then the pregnancy secret. When they see a doctor urgently needs to remain the senior left alone - confined to bed. The situation escalated. The film shows a society where the lie is declared to be truth in order to meet religious, social and political constraints. What is the meaning of responsibility, morality, courage in a dictatorship?

"We directors may only raise questions, give no answers," said Farhadi. "So we can avoid the censors. The danger is too great if we provide the answers. It is best if the viewer finds his own answers." "Nader and Simin" is a masterpiece of subtlety - and also celebrates great achievements in Iran. But for how long? Because filmmaking is highly political in Iran. Those who criticize the regime, risking imprisonment and banned from working, such as directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof. Farhadi exerts mild criticism - also at the society.
