Seahorses are amongst the most unique and fascinating fish, but are also most susceptible to population decline because of direct overexploitation, incidental captures, habitat destruction and other anthropogenic perturbations. Our Spotting of the Day, a strikingly beautiful Long-snouted Seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus), is considered "Data Deficient" by the IUCN, but is listed as near threatened, vulnerable or endangered in different European countries. In the Spanish coastal lagoon of Mar Menor, where this spotting was made, it is considered critically endangered.
