Peace for the Soul

A common space for harmonic peacemakers

.
there was once a king whose subjects were very happy. the king avoided all wars and cultivated peace and prosperity throughout the kingdom.
.
one day the king sent out a proclamation that declared that he wished to give each of his subjects a gift. it told them all to come to the gates of his fabulous palace at dawn on a particular day. everyone was most intrigued and all the chatter was about the gift they were to receive. they could hardly wait for the day to come.
.
at the dawn of the special day everyone of the kings subjects were crowded outside of the palace gates. at the back of that crowd was a poor man. he could only just hear the announcement that everyone could take just one item from the palace as a gift for them from the king.
.
and when the gates were opened everyone rushed inside and started to grab whatever they wanted as their gift. a farmer went straight for a plough and his son went for a horse to pull it.
each person was attracted to the item they most wanted but the poor man walked in last of all as those who were in front were leaving with their selected presents. he wandered through the grounds and came up to the palace itself. there people were leaving carrying items from within the palace. some with huge antique vases or carpets and gilded furniture.
.
the poor man wandered inside and saw the kings subjects taking everything of value from the ornate rooms. he went through giant doors and entered the throne room where more subjects were taking down the pictures in golden frames and taking away precious ornaments. each one with a happy face.
.
at the end of a long red carpet and sitting on a small throne sat the king with a smile on his lips. the poor man approached and fell to his knees before the king exclaiming 'your majesty
you must truly be the greatest king that ever lived' and he clasped the kings feet.
.
'i want you' said the poor man. 'i want only you.' whereupon the king replied that the mans request was granted. and they both laughed with the joy they were feeling knowing that it would never end......
