2023 Theme
Actions for peace: Our ambition for the #GlobalGoals

Each year the International Day of Peace (IDP) is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. Never has our world needed peace more.

This year’s theme is Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals. It is a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace. Fostering peace contributes to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will create a culture of peace for all.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said, "Peace is needed today more than ever. War and conflict are unleashing devastation, poverty, and hunger, and driving tens of millions of people from their homes. Climate chaos is all around. And even peaceful countries are gripped by gaping inequalities and political polarization."

Sustainable Development Goals

2023 marks the mid-point in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2023 observance of the International Day of Peace coincides with the SDG summit (18 – 19 September) to mark the mid-point milestone.

The SDGs aim to bring us closer to having more peaceful, just, and inclusive societies, free from fear and violence. But without the buy-in and contribution of a wide range of actors including the 1.2 billion young people alive, the goals will not be achieved. We invite you to join the United Nations’ call to take action for peace: fight inequality, drive action on climate change, and promote and protect human rights.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights & the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide

2023 is also the 75th anniversaries of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide. IDP 2023 encourages all youth to be ambitious in their engagement as positive and constructive social agents, to join the movement to reach the SDGs and contribute to building sustainable peace. Together we can help to lead our world towards a greener, more equitable, just, and secure future for all.

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

She died peacefully on Thursday afternoon at her Scottish estate, where she had spent much of the summer.

The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.

Her son King Charles III said the death of his beloved mother was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world.

He said: "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother.

"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world."

During the coming period of mourning, he said he and his family would be "comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held".

The King and his wife, Camilla, now Queen Consort, will return to London on Friday, Buckingham Palace said.

Senior royals had gathered at Balmoral after the Queen's doctors became concerned about her health earlier in the day.

All the Queen's children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.

Her grandson and now heir to the throne, Prince William, and his brother, Prince Harry, also gathered there.

Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was appointed by the Queen on Tuesday, said the monarch was the rock on which modern Britain was built, who had "provided us with the stability and strength that we needed".

Speaking about the new King, she said: "We offer him our loyalty and devotion, just as his mother devoted so much, to so many, for so long.

"And with the passing of the second Elizabethan age, we usher in a new era in the magnificent history of our great country, exactly as Her Majesty would have wished, by saying the words 'God save the King'."

Queen Elizabeth II's tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War and the UK's entry into - and withdrawal from - the European Union.

Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Ms Truss, born 101 years later in 1975.

She held weekly audiences with her prime minister throughout her reign.

At Buckingham Palace in London, crowds awaiting updates on the Queen's condition began crying as they heard of her death.

The Union flag on top of the palace was lowered to half-mast at 18:30 BST and an official notice announcing the death was posted outside.

On the Queen's death, Prince William and his wife, Catherine, became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Cornwall.

The official notice read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

The Queen was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, in Mayfair, London, on 21 April 1926.

Few could have foreseen she would become monarch but in December 1936 her uncle, Edward VIII, abdicated from the throne to marry the twice-divorced American, Wallis Simpson.

Elizabeth's father became King George VI and, at age 10, Lilibet, as she was known in the family, became heir to the throne.

Within three years, Britain was at war with Nazi Germany. Elizabeth and her younger sister, Princess Margaret, spent much of wartime at Windsor Castle after their parents rejected suggestions they be evacuated to Canada.

After turning 18, Elizabeth spent five months with the Auxiliary Territorial Service and learned basic motor mechanic and driving skills. "I began to understand the esprit de corps that flourishes in the face of adversity," she recalled later.

Through the war, she exchanged letters with her third cousin, Philip, Prince of Greece, who was serving in the Royal Navy. Their romance blossomed and the couple married at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947, with the prince taking the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

She would later describe him as "my strength and stay" through 74 years of marriage, before his death in 2021, aged 99.

The Duke of Edinburgh was at the Queen's side for more than six decades of reign, becoming the longest-serving consort in British history in 2009

Their first son, Charles, was born in 1948, followed by Princess Anne, in 1950, Prince Andrew, in 1960, and Prince Edward, in 1964. Between them, they gave their parents eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Princess Elizabeth was in Kenya in 1952, representing the ailing King, when Philip broke the news that her father had died. She immediately returned to London as the new Queen.

"It was all a very sudden kind of taking on and making the best job you can," she later recalled.

Elizabeth was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, aged 27, in front of a then-record TV audience estimated at more than 20 million people.

Subsequent decades would see great change, with the end of the British Empire overseas and the swinging '60s sweeping away social norms at home.

Charles, as the Prince of Wales, delivered the Queen's speech on behalf of his mother for the first time in May

Elizabeth reformed the monarchy for this less deferential age, engaging with the public through walkabouts, royal visits and attendance at public events.

Her commitment to the Commonwealth was a constant - she visited every Commonwealth country at least once.

But there were periods of private and public pain.

In 1992, the Queen's "annus horribilis", fire devastated Windsor Castle - a private residence as well as working palace - and three of her children's marriages broke down.

After the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in a car accident in Paris in 1997, the Queen drew criticism for appearing reluctant to respond publicly.

There were questions about the monarchy's relevance in modern society.

"No institution… should expect to be free from the scrutiny of those who give it their loyalty and support, not to mention those who don't," she acknowledged.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born in Mayfair, London, on 21 April 1926, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York

As a 21-year-old princess, Elizabeth had vowed to devote her life to service.

Reflecting on those words decades later, during her Silver Jubilee in 1977, she declared: "Although that vow was made in my salad days, when I was green in judgment, I do not regret nor retract one word of it."

That same commitment to serving was made 45 years later in a thank you letter to the nation on the weekend of her Platinum Jubilee in June.

The milestone was celebrated with a mix of state ceremonies and a colourful festival of all things British, as well as lively street parties.

Although the Queen's health kept her from some events, she said: "My heart has been with you all."

In a moment met with cheers from huge crowds in the Mall, she was joined by three generations of her family on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the finale of a pageant.

He and his wife, Camilla, are at Balmoral alongside his siblings, Princess Anne, and Princes Andrew and Edward.

They are accompanied by Edward's wife, Sophie, as well as Princes William and Harry.

William's wife, Catherine, remained at Windsor with their children - George, Charlotte and Louis - as it has been their first full day at a new school.

The Royal Family has now entered a period of mourning.

In the coming days, much of national life will be put on hold.

Official engagements will be cancelled and Union flags will be flown at half-mast on royal residences, government buildings, across the Armed Forces and on UK posts overseas.

Members of Parliament will pay tribute to the Queen and take an oath to King Charles.

There will be church bells tolling and gun salutes as local and national organisations and charities organise ways to pay their respects, with commemorative events and books of condolence.

A state funeral for the Queen is expected in the next two weeks.

Foreign leaders have paid tribute to the Queen, with US President Joe Biden recalling how she stood in solidarity with the US in their "darkest days" after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin wished King Charles "courage and resilience in the face of this heavy, irreparable loss".

To France's president, Emmanuel Macron, she was a "kind-hearted Queen" and "friend of France".

For Justin Trudeau, Canada's prime minister, the Queen was a constant in Canadians' lives and one of his "favourite people in the world".

Unfortunately, this is an illusion.”

The UN chief said current Nationally Determined Contributions, which are formal commitments by governments, still condemn the world to a calamitous 2.7 degree increase. He added that even if recent pledges were clear and credible — and there are serious questions about some of them — the world is still careening towards climate catastrophe, with the best-case scenario producing a temperature rise well above a disastrous two degrees.

Guterres stressed the need for more ambition and more action, adding that this requires trust with is in short supply. Guterres noted the dangerous levels of mistrust among the big powers and appeal to the G20 for decisive steps to bridge what he called the trust gap.

Guterres highlighted the vaccine inequality and said, “I have long been pushing the G20 to lead a global vaccination plan to reach everyone, everywhere. That plan did not materialize — largely because of geo-political divides.” He added, “Global coordinated action has taken a backseat to vaccine hoarding and vaccine nationalism. People in the richest countries are getting third doses of vaccine, while only five per cent of Africans are fully vaccinated.”

The Secretary-General also highlighted the vast disparity in resources for pandemic recovery which is eroding trust. He said, “The recovery is amplifying inequalities. This is immoral. The IMF recently issued 650 billion USD in Special Drawing Rights. But this support largely goes to the countries that need them least since the SDRs are distributed according to quotas — an injustice in itself. That’s why I have been calling for a substantial — not symbolic — re-allocation of unused SDRs to vulnerable countries that need them, including middle-income countries. The G20 has a key role to guarantee it.”

Guterres urged the G20 to extend the Debt Service Suspension Initiative into next year and make it available to highly indebted vulnerable, including middle-income countries that request it. He underscored that countries should not be forced to choose between servicing their debt or serving their people.

The UN chief said trust was also being undermined by a lack of climate ambition on mitigation, adaptation and finance. He said concrete action was required now to reduce global emissions by 45 per cent by 2030, added that G20 countries have a particular responsibility to keep the 1.5 degree goal alive, as they represent around 80 per cent of emissions.

He said, “According to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities in light of national circumstances, developed countries must lead the effort. But given the present situation, emerging economies, too, must go the extra mile to achieve effective global emissions reductions in this decade. We need maximum ambition, from all countries on all fronts.”
Guterres also called on donors to allocate at least half of their climate finance towards adaptation and resilience, adding that ambition on climate finance includes making good on the commitment to provide 100 billion USD each year to developing countries.

He welcomed efforts led by Canada and Germany to help achieve this, but said the first step delays the largest support for years, without clear guarantees.

He said, “Unfortunately, the message to developing countries is essentially this: The check is in the mail. On all our climate goals, we have miles to go. And we must pick up the pace. Scientists are clear on the facts. Leaders must be as clear in their actions. Glasgow can be a turning point towards a safer, greener world for our children and grandchildren. It is not too late. But we must act now.”

Guterres urged the G20 to show the solidarity that people want and the world desperately needs, which begins by rebuilding trust and credibility among their members.

Responding to questions, Guterres said the world would get nowhere if developed and developing countries blame each other. He said, “This is the moment for everyone to do the maximum - developed countries must do more and the emerging economies must also do more instead of creating a scenario of blaming each other. That is why this G20 is an opportunity to rebuild trust and for all to do their best.”

Official Poster of the 2020 edition of Global Nonviolent Film Festival.

The poster is created on a concept by film director Bruno Pischiutta, and it features actress Greta Goldling. The original artwork, realized in digital collage method, was made by Daria Trifu.

“The poster advertises the Festival. It is also a freeze-frame that identifies the present year; it will stay there forever and it will be seen for years to come.

Until now, 2020 has been marked by two historical elements: COVID-19 and the social unrest in America. The people who will view the poster twenty years from now will not need to read the date of the event, but they will be able to visually identify 2020 as the year when this Festival’s edition took place. 2020 is also the year that marks the debut in the international film industry of actress Greta Goldling who, in this picture, reminisces a young Angelina Jolie,”said Bruno Pischiutta, who also serves as the Festival’s artistic consultant.

Daria Trifu, the Festival’s director, further explains that“Global Nonviolent Film Festival showcases only non-violent films since 2012. We were the first to create such an international event and, in 2016, to take it on-line so that the whole world could watch the selected movies. As I listened to Bruno describing his vision for the poster, I wanted to incorporate all the elements in a digital collage where they fuse seemingness through colours, shapes and contrasts.”

In light of the impact that current events have on our world, the film business has to adapt. Some of the most famous film festivals are migrating to virtual platforms, and several premieres by Hollywood Studios are taking place on-line.

Global Film Studio owns the Global Nonviolent Film Festival and Daria Trifu, who is the Company’s president, had this to add:“We live in a digital world. For our business, it’s never been more universally clear that expanding virtually is the right choice and the best use of resources. Our Company chose this path early, in 2016, when we decided to take our already successful traditional local film festival on-line exclusively. We closed our physical screenings and moved the whole event on-line; it was a bold move that could have gone two ways.

It went the right way, and we are very proud of the event’s success.”

In 2021, Global Film Studio is launching GlobalCinema.online, its own OTT streaming platform. GlobalCinema.online will showcase feature films, shorts and documentaries to paid subscribers. Some films will be available on a pay-per-view basis so that the platform will be able to host premieres and limited time releases too. Global Cinema will be a competitor to Netflix, and it aims to bring to the world viewers top quality films in every genre with a special focus on non-violent content. The film catalogue will include some of the best movies presented at the Global Nonviolent Film Festival.

Global Nonviolent Film Festival accepts submissions via FilmFreeway. The deadline to submit is August 22. The Festival takes place on-line at www.globalnonviolentfilmfestival.com.

The co-founder of Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh, believes that as his homeland enters a new phase as Union Territory, it will need sensitive handling because solutions made in New Delhi often do not work in the fragile ecosystem of the trans Himalayan land.

Excerpts from an interview:

Don't you believe Ladakh needs to develop and become on par with the rest of India?

No. Ladakh does not need the same kind of development and industrialisation. It needs a more harmonious and sustainable approach that can go for a much longer time without exploiting the environment.

The Himalayan Institute of Alternatives is taking some proactive action in this matter, right?

Yes. We decided that instead of just sitting and waiting for the Centre to act, we should first understand what will work for us and what won't. So we sent members to different parts of the country—union territories like Andaman and Nicobar, the tribal states of north east India, Bodoland and Sikkim, to see how they have fared over the past years. Our groups represented all parts of Ladakhi society—men, women, politicians, religious leaders.

They have come back and are now sharing their learning at various gatherings—in town halls and village assemblies.

The efforts to green Ladakh, by the army and locals—isn't that tampering with nature, which created Ladakh as a natural desert?

Firstly, let me tell you that the army has not done much greening. They spoke a lot about it, but stopped after the flash floods of 2010. Most of the planting has been done by the locals. The army made commendable efforts, but since their units move every two years, most of what they planted did not survive. What they succeeded in however, was offering good R and D to the locals.

When we talk about greening, we do not mean forests. We mean increasing the local vegetation, not planting invasive species. Human intervention should be in aiding nature, in helping the plants that are struggling to grow. This vegetation holds the water in the region, optimising what is available. Such an effort is harmonious with nature.

You have come up with an interesting crowd sourcing project. Please elaborate.

This is an attempt for the planet. It is a unique crowdsourcing initiative where you pledge behaviour changes worth a certain amount of dollars. For example, you could pledge to stop ironing clothes, start bicycling, take the lift and choose a train over a plane. We then evaluate how much each pledge will be in terms of dollars and work out how much the overall contribution for the planet will be. The planet does not need money, it needs behavioural change. We will launch this project in December, around the time when people begin thinking of resolutions for the new year.

I have often wondered why Americans generally, and politicians and commentators particularly, are so obsessed with Communism and Socialism. Ev...er since the “squad” came out with policies for the poor, everyone is rushing to brand them as “leftists,” Communists, or Socialists as though that is the greatest insult in the world.

There is nothing wrong with Communism, Socialism, or Capitalism as mere philosophies. What is wrong is the way we mutilate and abuse these philosophies. Yes, even Capitalism is abused and mutilated to feed the unfathomable greed of a few. The ills of the world cannot be pinned on Communism or Socialism alone. Capitalism also shoulders a good measure of of the mess because we are driven by selfishness and greed at the cost of dividing the world between the rich and the poor.

My grandfather, M. K. Gandhi, talked about “compassionate capitalism” as well as the theories of Trusteeship and Constructive Action. He recognized that the world is one large human family; peace can be ensured only if we stop exploiting each other and learn to share. He accepted that each human being had a different set of talents, and that we don’t own those talents but are rather “trustees” of the talent.

It means that we should use those talents to help others as much as we use them to help ourselves. Helping others must be constructive, designed to rebuild the self-respect and self-confidence of the economically, socially, and culturally oppressed. Yes, this even includes the religiously oppressed. Exploited people learn to believe the canard we spread that they are incapable of doing anything for themselves, let us dispel this untruth and instead leverage our talents to promote dignity and pathways to prosperity.

An extension of this theory leads us to “Compassionate Capitalism”. If we have the talent to make money, by all means make it but don’t be motivated by greed. Let the money you make enhance the quality of life of your workers and the community around you. Don’t give crumbs off your table, but instead give significantly so that it makes a difference in this world.

So yes, Communism, Socialism, and Capitalism work the best when they are combined together. Taken individually we have abused and exploited them to death, but as a packet, if we remove greed from the equation this world will learn to live in harmony and peace. So I am not afraid of the “squad” injecting a bit of socialism and capitalism into our greed-driven society.
