According to the USGS, Afghanistan sits on about $1 trillion to $3 trillion worth of minerals; including 2.2 billion tons of iron ore, 60 million metric tons of copper, 1.4 million tons of rare earth elements (REEs) such as lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, and veins of aluminium, gold, silver, zinc, mercury, and lithium; and significant deposits of the "conflict mineral" lapis lazuli.
Oh... And they grow a few opium poppies there too, contributing to about 90% of the world's heroin production.
