Love for Tibet

"Never give up"

No matter what is going on
Never give up
Develop the heart
Too much energy in your country
Is spent developing the mind
Instead of the heart
Be compassionate
Not just to your friends
But to everyone
Be compassionate
Work for peace
In your heart and in the world
Work for peace
And I say again
Never give up
No matter what is going on around you
Never give up.

- Poem by the Dalai Lama -

The true meaning of life

We are visitors on this planet,
We are here for ninety
Or hundred years
At the very most.
During that period,
We must try to do something good,
Something useful,
With our lives.
If you contribute to other people’s happiness,
You will find the true goal,
The true meaning of life.

- 14th Dalai Lama

"If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to. If you are not afraid of dying, there is nothing you cannot achieve."

Buddhism quite clearly insists that there is no difference between others and ourselves but what does that really mean? We must discover the equality of value between others and ourselves to gain peace and reduce stress. Because our need for happiness has always been greater than others happiness, self-cherishing is a problem. Our own pressing need for happiness perhaps has even caused us to do things that hurt others. By placing ourselves on the pedestal of self importance, everyone else seem to be “down there”, ready targets to be manipulated. These distinctions are not only a natural outcome of self-cherishing, but this attitude is even encouraged in some societies more than others, making those cultures more dangerous.

In Tibet, dramatic displays of self-cherishing such as seeing one’s self as superior, was considered to be a social embarrassment. After saying that, I remember that Tibetan nobles did not treat peasants very well, and so, using others, not being nice, and feeling superior was not absent in Tibetan lay society. However, from a dharmic point of view, that was considered to be very bad form! Perhaps Buddhism continues to be badly needed in Tibet!

I hope that you understand what the word ‘spiritual’ really means. It means to search for – to investigate – the true nature of the mind. There’s nothing spiritual outside. My rosary isn’t spiritual; my robes aren’t spiritual. Spiritual means the mind and spiritual people are those who seek its nature.

"Religion is like going out to dinner with friends.
Everyone may order something different,
but everyone can still sit at the same table."

We won't bring about peace in the world merely by praying for it; we have to take steps to tackle the violence and corruption that disrupt peace. We can't expect change if we don't take action.

"We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves." ~ His Holiness The Dalai Lama: “None of us wants problems and yet we create so many for ourselves. If we want to change, where do we start? Not with the government or big institutions, but with ourselves as individuals. Through transforming our minds and developing inner values we can change ourselves, influence our families and communities and so bring about a change in humanity. Starting with ourselves we have to let compassion become part of our daily lives.”
