Question: I feel mind is like a monkey which wavers, making concentration difficult during prayers or chanting. How do I overcome this?

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

The elephant cannot keep its trunk stationary. It keeps swaying it always. In order to arrest its movement, the mahout gives it a huge chain to hold on to. Similarly, in order for the mind to concentrate, we have it focus on the divine Name and Form of the Lord. That is the basic principle of idol worship.

Instead of going for a multitude of Names and Forms, it is advisable to stick to one deity and chant one Mantra incessantly. This will bring concentration and one-pointedness. One can thus achieve eternal bliss by merely chanting the Maha Mantra.

M. could not quite understand the significance of this "image of Spirit". One should not worship clay."

Master (sharply); "That's the one hobby of you Calcutta people -- giving lectures and bringing others to the light! Nobody ever stops to consider how to get the light himself. Who are you to teach others?

Master: "The thing is that one must love God. Through intense love one attains the vision of Him. The attraction of the husband for the chaste wife, the attraction of the child for its mother, the attraction of worldly possessions for the worldly man--when a man can blend these three into one, and direct it all to God, then he gets the vision of God."

Master: "Why so? What about the yoga of practice? At Kamarpukur I have seen the women of the carpenter family selling flattened rice. Let me tell you how alert they are while doing their business. The pestle of the husking-machine that flattens the paddy constantly falls into the hole of the mortar. The woman turns the paddy in the hole with one hand and with the other holds her baby on her lap as she nurses it. In the mean time customers arrive. The machine goes no pounding the paddy, and she carries on her bargains with the customers. She says to them, 'Pay the few pennies you owe me before you take anything more.' You see, she has all these things to do at the same time -- nurse the baby, turn the paddy as the pestle pounds it, take the flattened rice out of the hole and talk to the buyers. This is called the yoga of practice. Fifteen parts of her mind out of sixteen are fixed on the pestle of the husking-machine, lest it should pound her hand. With only one part of her mind she nurses the baby and talks to the buyers. Likewise, he who leads the life of a householder should devote fifteen part of his mind to God; otherwise he will face ruin and fall into the clutches of Death. He should perform the duties of the world with only one part of his mind. "

Dear All,

Keshab Chandra Sen the famous Brahmo leader of the time felt much drawn to this simple villager who had attained the summit of all religions. He published articles about Sri Ramakrishna which brought him to light. Many began to visit the Paramahamsa at Dakshineswar.

Sri Ramakrishna was frustrated with worldly talks. He would go up to the rooftop of the kuthi after the evening vesper service and cry out in an agonised voice, "Come to me, Oh, devotees! Where are you? I cannot to bear live without you." And, one by one, his inner circle of devotees began to arrive. He began to train the young boys who were later to become monks and spread his message all over the world under the leadership of Naren who came to be known as Swami Vivekananda. He lit the fire of renunciation in them. There were several householder devotees who he taught to remember God even while they performed their duties as a householder.

When the English educated Swami Vivekananda, in search of Truth, asked the humble Bengal villager Sri Ramakrishna, "Have you seen God?" the latter replied, "Yes. I see him just as I see you here, only in a much more intense way." These words impressed Swami Vivekananda.

Sri Ramakrishna lived in Dakshineswar for most part of his life and just as bees swarm the flower when it blooms, so too, people flocked to him. There was nothing but talk of God in his presence. He refused none.

Sri Ramakrishna was afflicted with throat cancer. Even during this period he helped and guided all those who sought him. He passed awayi on 16th August 1886 at Cossipore garden house. Part of his relics was installed at Kankurgachi Yogodyana and the rest at Belur Math.

Two or three days before the passing away of the Master he called Narendra (later Swami Vivekananda) to his side and looked steadily at him and passed into samadhi (super conscious state). The Swami said that he felt a subtle force like the electric shock enter into his body and he lost all outer consciousness.

On returning to body conciousness he found his Master Sri Ramakrishna in tears who said to him, on being questioned, that he had given his all to him (Naren) and he (Sri Ramakrishna) had become a beggar. That, with that power transferred to him, he had to do much work for the good of the world before he returned.

Soon after Sri Ramakrishna returned to Dakshineswar where he was once again drowned in high spiritual experiences. Sri Ramakrishna has described this period of deep spiritual experiences. He said that he felt as if caught in the midst of a whirlwind. Everything appeared to him full of Consciousness. Even a prostitute on the street reminded him of the Mother. He shared his food with dogs. His hair was matted where birds would perch and peck at the rice which were thrown on the head during the worship. Snakes would crawl over his motionless body. He had no sleep for six long years and his eyes had lost the power of winking! His eyelids would not close! Sri Ramakrishna said that no ordinary man could have withstood even an iota of the fervour that he underwent during this period. Mother appeared to him and comforted him.

He practiced sixty-four methods of Tantra and attained perfection through all of them. He practiced the vairous Feelings of devotion. Later he practised Vedanta under the guidance of Totapuri, a Vedanta monk. Totapuri was stunned to find Sri Ramakrishna attain the goal in just three days, which he himself had attained through years of struggle.

Sri Ramakrishna taught her everything -- household duties to high spiritual practices. He taught her how to judge people's character, to move with various kinds of people, etc. Though Sri Ramakrishna and Sarada Devi lived together at Dakshineswar their minds soared high above the worldly plane. It was during this period that Sri Ramakrishna performed Shorasi puja whence he worshipped Mother Kali in the person of Sarada Devi.

Dear All,

At the age of six or seven Gadadhar was walking along the narrow ridges of the fields when he had his first experience of samadhi. The sky was filled with dark rain bearing clouds. Just then a flock of cranes, white as milk, flew across. The beauty of the white cranes against the dark clouds filled his heart with such joy that he plunged into samadhi.

His father's death in 1843 when he was only seven years old made him more indrawn. He mingled with the Sadhus who visited the village and learnt hymns from them. When he turned nine years he was invested with the sacred thread. Gathering his friends he would enact the various scenes from the Epics. Once during the Shivaratri he enacted the role of Lord Siva and lost outer consciousness.

Nothing could persuade young Gadadhar to undertake bread winning education. During his childhood he had seen the hidden India through the lives of the many holy men he came across. The seed of renunciation had been sown even at that early stage of life. From these Holy men he learnt the only purpose of life -- to realise God.

Divine will led him to Dakshineswar where, after the death of his brother Ramkumar, he began to officiate as Priest in the Kali Temple established by Rani Rasmani. Rani Rasamani and one of her sons-in-law Mathur Babu were deeply devoted to the young Gadadhar. It is learnt from Ramlal, a nephew of Sri Ramakrishna, that the name Ramakrishna was given to him by Mathur Babu. Dakshnineswar became the stage for the innumerable divine plays of the Lord incarnated as Sri Ramakrishna. It was here that Sri Ramakrishna passed through the God-intoxicated state whence unable to perform the ritual worship in the Temple he handed over the charge to his nephew Hriday.

Hriday has played a very important role in the life of Sri Ramakrishna as he was witness to the many spiritual experiences of Sri Ramakrishna which later helped his disciples to draw up his biography.

While staying there Lord Vishnu appeared to him in a vision and declared that He would be born as his (Khudiram's) son. Filled with joy at first he suddenly realized his poor means and said to the Lord, "I am a very poor man. How can I take the responsibility of bringing you up?"

The Lord said, "Whatever you give me to eat I shall enjoy."

At the same time Chandra Devi, his wife, who was at Kamarpukur had a vision in front of Siva Temple through which she learnt the birth of a divine son to her.

Dereypore was the ancestral village of Khudiram. In 1814 his landlord ordered him to bear false witness in court against a neighbour. But the honest Khudiram refused to do so. The wicked landlord deprived Khudiram of his ancestral property through a false case. However, another landlord at Kamapukur offered him land and a dwelling place. So the family shifted to Kamarpukur.

It was here that on February 18, 1836, the divine son was born to Khurdiram and Chandra Devi. They named him Gadadhar in memory of the vision that Khudiram had had at Gaya. Gadadhar, who later came to be known as Ramakrishna, had two elder brothers Ramkumar and Rameswar and an elder sister Katyayani. He had a younger sister, too.

Little Gadadhar learned to read and write in the village school. From his father he learnt hymns to gods and goddesses. He loved to listen to discourses on the various Hindu Epics. Quick to grasp and possessed of great memory he would recite to the villagers whatever he had heard. He loved to paint; from the potters he learnt to make images of gods and goddesses.

!!!
In this edition of 'Saint' Sketch', we take a look at the great saint from Bengal.

His whole life was literally an uninterrupted contemplation of God.
Dear All,

In this edition of 'Saint' Sketch', we take a look at the great saint from Bengal.

His whole life was literally an uninterrupted contemplation of God. Seekers of God of all religions feel irresistibly drawn to his life and teachings. Through his God-intoxicated life Sri Ramakrishna proved that the revelation of God takes place at all times and that God-realization is not the monopoly of any particular age, country, or people.

In the present-day world, threatened by nuclear war and torn by religious intolerance, Sri Ramakrishna's message of harmony gives us hope and shows the way. May his life and teachings ever inspire us.
---------------------------
The Lord has declared that whenever religion declined and chaos prevailed He would incarnate to protect the good and destroy the wicked and thus reestablish Dharma.

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa is one of the greatest Avatars (Incarnations) of this Holy land, Bharat (India). The incarnation of the Lord as Sri Ramakrishna took place at at time when India was passing through a phase of decadence. Various other faiths had seeped in and rebellious youths felt much drawn to other cultures and ideas. The teachings of Vedas, the great Maharishis were ridiculed. Worship of images were decried. The common man was thrown into confusion.

Swami Vivekananda, the spiritual successor and the torch bearer of Sri Ramakrishna's teachings, sitting beside his Master, a couple of days before the latter's passing away, thought "Well, now if you can declare that you are God, then only will I believe you are really God Himself."

No sooner had this thought flashed across the Swami's mind than Sri Ramakrishna looked at him and said, "Oh, my Naren, are you still not convinced? He who in the past was born as Rama and Krishna is now living in this very body as Ramakrishna -- but not from the standpoint of your Vedanta (that speaks of every jiva as verily divine) but actually so."

!!! More devotion through e-satsang to follow - Be blessed !!!
------------------------------------------
Regards & Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan:
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Pl visit http://namadwaar.org/home.php

or listen and chant along with the tune...
Dear All,

Last of the Ten Commandments:

10. BRING WEALTH TO YOUR TEACHER TO CONTINUE HIS EDUCATIONAL WORK (acharyayapriyam dhanam aaharitya :

To run an educational institution one needs funds support in many other ways. If students do not give back what they received from the teachers in the form of money or other type of help, It only proves that they have understood the true meaning of education. An educated person is one who has a spirit of gratefulness. This gratefulness can be expressed in many ways such as offering monetary support or protecting the interests of the institution at the political or administrative level and so on. The best way to express one’s sense of gratitude is to follow the principles of truthfulness and kindness and other higher principles one learns from ones teachers.

Conclusion

If one wants to overcome the problems of youth (such as restlessness, lack of self-control, being too soft or being too rash and so on), One must learn to practice these values.

Life means change. Often it is said that we are living in changing times. Indeed the very word used in Sanskrit for “World” is samsara, which means, that which is changing. The rich becomes poor and the poor becomes rich. The young becomes old and the old ones pass out. The healthy becomes sick and the sick becomes healthy. Governments change, policies change, Fashions change, . There is constant change in this world. But in this midst of this change and new challenges at levels of our life, one needs certain changeless values. These Ten Commandments from the Upanishads are truly eternal values which makes life meaningful and rewarding.

Students often search for lasting solutions to the problems they face. The values discussed above contain hints and suggestion to face life from a deeper level. In order to grasp their true meaning, one must meditate on them and practice them in life.

Dear All,

Ninth of the Ten Commandments:

9) Shraddhaya deyam - (Give liberally gifts with faith and humility)

Do not stand on a high pedestal and take cents in your hands and say, “Here my poor man”, but be grateful that the poor man is there, so that by making a gift to him you are able to help yourself. It is not the receiver that is blessed, but it is the giver. Be thankful that you are allowed to exercise your power of benevolence and mercy in the world, and thus become pure and perfect’.

In other words, we should help monetary, physical or intellectual, or in any other form with a sense of respect. Shraddha means faith with respect.. If we do anything with shraddha, its fruits become manifold. Moreover the attitude of giving help removes our undue attachment to money, which is a great hindrance in developing a true personality.

Money can only be a means and never an end in itself. So when we gift money without a sense of pride and arrogance, such as giving makes pure, holy and compassionate. It makes us great. A lot of social or personal evils can be traced to people unwilling to help, which in turn leads to miserliness and cruelty. This unwillingness comes out of our attachment to money.

Now-a- days, thanks to the IT boom many young people suddenly become recipients of huge wealth, and then they do not know what to do with it. It often degrades them into subhuman levels of drinking, drug addictions, violence and so on. No wonder the instances of suicides and depressions are also increasing. If only people understand the meaning of learning to give. Learning to make judicious use of money, at right place and time and to right person is an essential part of the total educational vision of ancient rishis.

Seventh of the Ten Commandments:

Look upon your Mother, Father, Teacher, and Guest as Living Gods.

(matru devo bhava, pitru devo bhava, acharya devo bhava, athithi devo bhava):

In today, s fast world, we seem to become too much money-centred.Our respect is based on the money or the position they have. This means we have reduced others and ourselves to mere economic or biological units. That is why there is an ever growing problem of parents being ill-treated by their children. Teachers being neglected by their students and friendship with good people being at stake. The rishi rightly says that as an antidote to this, we should cultivate respectfulness towards others.

These days many young people do not hesitate to leave their parents when the parents need them most. This is because of selfish motive of keeping money above everything. What these young people fail to see is that they too turn old, sooner or later, and will have to face a similar disloyalty and unpleasant experience. Youth is not eternal Wake up! Be grateful and willing to acknowledge what you receive from others or else our social and personal life will be a hell- that is the insightful message of the Vedic rishis.

Respect for one’s family members and for teachers and for good people (who come as guests to our house) goes along way in keeping a healthy social life. This is the best ‘social insurance’ one can think of. This respect for others is the foundation of strong family bonds, which is the basis of a healthy society.

Dear All,

Sixth of the Ten Commandments:

6) Swadhyaya Pravachandaabhyam na pramaditavyam - ( Hold on to self study and teaching)

These days one speaks of ‘Knowledge Workers’. It is interesting to note how the Upanishads, in the remote past of world history, gave so much importance to cultivation of love of knowledge and spread of knowledge to others. Self-study means always keeping ourself abreast of what is happening not only in our field of work or interest but also studying the motives and developing the habit of self-introspection. How many evils owe their existence to our being unaware of them! If only we are aware of our motives and the ideas directing or affecting our action, living a right life will become a rewarding experience. Self-Study therefore includes self- introspection Not only should we acquire knowledge through reading books or articles or a judicious use of Internet, we should be willing to share our knowledge with others. This ‘Teaching’ of what we know ultimately helps us to clarify our ideas and make them grow. As some one said once ‘If I have a dollar and you have a dollar and we both exchange, we both still have one dollar each. But if I have an idea and you have an idea and if we exchange, we both exchange our ideas, we both will have two ideas each’. Swami Vivekanada’s words can be recalled here: ‘Doing is good but that comes from thinking. Fill your self therefore with good thoughts’. This is possible only when one practices self-study and shares ones knowledge with others.

5) Deva pitru Karyabhyam na pramaditavyam - (Hold on to worship of Gods and manes)

This means do not neglect your spiritual practices such as japa or prayers and medition. If one is spiritually strong; one can be always sure of never losing one’s calmness of the mind which is so essential to face the challenges of life. This means having faith in a Transcendental Truth, in the eternity of the self. This brings an element of infinity and vastness of life. Or else, what is the fun in being born like any other living being and dying a dog’s death? The great saint kabir remarked with a tinge of humor.

When you were born, you cried and others rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die, you rejoice and others cry.”

This means living a life of meaning and greatness. Why would otherwise people weep for one at death?

Another aspect of this commandment is that we should be respectful to our cultural and spiritual heritage. We should ‘progress’ in life but not by neglecting or denouncing the time-honored wisdom our forefathers have left for us in the form of our cultural and spiritual tradition. This is what is meant by pitru karyabhyam

The Upanishadic was a prosperous society. It was not a consumerist’s society but it was full of wealth and meet one’s needs. That is why the rishi advices that one should not give up acquisition of wealth but, he also cautions, one should do so through legitimate means. When a person earns through illegitimate means, he gets wealth but along with wealth, he also gets fear, suspicion, and restlessness of the mind despite of so much of wealth, how many people complain of lack of peace of mind or even normal sleep and joy in life! Sri Rama Krishna used to advice people to earn well but not consider earning as an end by itself. When one earns honestly one may not get all the income to fulfill greed and imagined requirements, but one can surely meet one’s needs

Dear All,

Every year, millions of people all over the world celebrate the Holy Christmas. There are festivities and joyous celebrations, a lot of merry-making. People rejoice that Lord Jesus took birth in our midst about two thousand years ago.

It is certainly an event over which all humanity ought to be proud and jubilant. But it is essential, too, to realise that Lord Jesus had a message to deliver. He laid with his own life and blood, a path for mankind to tread. It is essential that mankind should, in the midst of the joyous celebration of the Holy Event of the Birth of Jesus, reflect on the glorious life of the Lord over His Message. For, in it lies the key to world peace and brotherhood.

May God bless you! May the blessings of Lord Jesus be upon you all.

----------------------------------

WHAT CHRISTMAS MEANS TO ME

Combining as it does, the joy of life and the Spirit of God, the festival of Christmas comes year after the approaching herald of a new year, with its sweet message and silent shifting of our attention, more and yet more to the spiritual pursuits in which alone consist man’s real peace, true progress, and everlasting glory.

Whether it was Jane Taylor or Watts who affirmed, “Lord, I ascribe it to Thy grace, and not to chance, as others do, that I was born of Christian race” it is no expression of any spirit of fanaticism but a humble acknowledgement of the excellent benefits that the genuine Christian way and style of life confers upon one; it is an eloquent tribute to the First Christmas divinely celebrated in the Christ’s crib one thousand, nine hundred and fifty-six years ago, a tribute paid by one who has reaped in experience the life-making fruits of the seeds sown by the birth of Christ. Besides that elevation of sentiments that inspiration for the inmost spirit in man, that gladness of heart for all, Happy Christmas renews and revivifies in us splendid spiritual values, unyielding spirit of courage, hope, service and sacrifice, a wider and more profound meaning of life to live by. Nothing but a complete volume of weighty writing becomes necessary for any satisfactory narration of the Great Meaning that Christmas has always held for each of us.

May this Christmas bring to everyman on earth, immense happiness, persisting peace, a new strength, a long life of service, love, sacrifice and spiritual progress!

---------------------

CHILDREN’S SONG

Two little eyes to look to God,
Two little ears to hear His word,
Two little feet to walk in His ways,
Two little lips to sing His praise,
Two little hands to do His will
And one little heart to love Him still

Without truthfulness and honesty, life is full of fear and suspicion. Even in the economic field, honesty is a must; otherwise even the most booming economy will get ruined. Truth fullness is also required in order to cultivate love between members of the family. Satyameva Jayathe, says the Mundukaka Upanishad. Sri Ramakrishna said that to be truthful in one’s speech and actions is true austerity and the sure way to experience God. It is even said that chambal valley dacoits swear by truth before they distribute their booties among themselves! They swear ‘let us be honest in dividing these booties among themselves! They were interested not just in improving the grades and performance of their students but in their personality development.

They treated their students with respect and affection and were keen that they turn out to be ideal citizens, ideal human beings. Their educational vision was for the whole gamut of human life and the ultimate well being of the individual and the society. They encouraged a spirit of inquiry coupled with respect and devotion. Intense love to gain knowledge and a zeal for constant self-improvement were embedded in their approach to education.

The well-known shanti mantra (peace mantra), sahana vavatu, is an example of this.

Following are the Ten Commandments drawn from the section. It may well be a source of inspiration and guidance for the present day students and educationalists.

1) Satyam na pramaditavyam - ( Hold on to Truth)

2) Dharman na pramaditavyam - ( Hold on to Righteousness)

3) Kushalan na pramaditavyam - ( Hold on to Welfare activities)

4) Bhootyei na pramaditavyam - ( Hold on to acquisition of wealth)

5) Deva pitru Karyabhyam na pramaditavyam - (Hold on to worship of Gods and manes)

6) Swadhyaya Pravachandaabhyam na pramaditavyam - ( Hold on to self study and teaching)

7) Matru Devo bhava, pitru devo bhava - ( Take care of father and mother)

8) Anavadyani karmani tani sevitavyani - (Do only good deeds, avoid bad deeds)

9) Shraddhaya deyam - ( Give liberally gifts with faith and humility)

10) Acharyayapriyam dhanam aahritya - (Bring wealth to your teacher to help him continue his educational work)

This is the total vision of education, containing enduring values for living a purposeful life. Only when one follows these values in life one gets true happiness, prosperity and grace.

Mere obtaining a certificate or degree can help one get some job to earn money but life is not just doing a job or generating wealth.

Life is a process of individual and collective growth. ‘Man does not live by bread alone’ says the bible. Man’s needs are not just physical. He has cultural and spiritual needs as well.

In the light of this fact, let us try to understand these commandments elaborately. Stay with us......

What is Education?

Swami Vivekananda explains beautifully that "Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man"

so education must be best taught to promote plain living and high thinking

Our Swamiji used to say that, Our present day schools and colleges give secular education.

There is neither ethical discipline nor spiritual instruction. The students have no spiritual high ideals of life. They learn something in order to make out their livelihood. They study only to get emoluments. This is very sad indeed. That is the reason why they turn out to be spiritual bankrupts in the end.

Very recently I had the opportunity to read on the subject titled

"Ten Commandments for Students from Taittiriya Upanishad"

and was immensely pleased to read such noble thoughts our sages have penned down for the sake of Humanity.

Hence thought to share for all of us to possess right understanding and divine knowledge to guide our children / students in the right path!

Let us all read, cascade and share these wonderful Attributes.
We all use mantras or words all day long -- repetitive, out loud, or silently -- phrases such as "It's hard," or "I'm tired." "I don't know what I'm doing," "It will never happen ... .. I'm stressed," "There's not enough time," or "There's not enough money." We don't even notice them becoming part of our reality by repetition.

We act out on what we say, live on how we think. If our mantra is, "I am stressed," we will be stressed. Or if our mantra is, "It's never going to happen, " it's never going to happen.

In the beginning was the word, and the word was God. So powerful are our words to ourselves and to others and the power of positive thinking and expressions of positive thinking through words are very important.

The words in Manthras are chosen not only for their meaning as words, but also for a scientific reason that goes far beyond pure definition.

All mantras we use are based on the science of "Naadam" -- the secrets hidden in sound.

The roof of our mouth has eighty-four meridian points, all along the upper palate.

Mantras were given to us as special gifts. Long ago, highly evolved Rishis (Seers) went into deep meditation. They began reciting certain sounds that made the tongue hit these meridian points in the mouth in certain combinations.

It's kind of like playing the piano -- if certain notes are struck, a beautiful song is produced. With every word we speak, or in this case the mantras we recite, we hit certain "keys." If the right combination of keys is struck, then the hypothalamus, thalamus, and pituitary in the brain are all stimulated in such a way as to bring our minds into a meditative state, and even into ecstasy.

Which ever combination of letters gave the ancient seers this peaceful feeling or helped them heal their ailments, they passed it on to us. Every single manthram in the vedas are the results of their experience.

Nothing is accidental.
------------------------------------------
Regards & Chant the Mahamantra Nama kirtan:
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Pl visit http://namadwaar.org/home.php

or listen and chant along with the tune...
Sri Sri Muralidhara swamiji's Maha Mantra Keerthanam...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsAWsd-XVOI
Question: “Today’s society seems to be in a very bad condition as never seen before.....?tag:peaceformeandtheworld.ning.com,2013-02-24:5143044:BlogPost:1970582013-02-24T02:03:20.000ZRavishankar.Ghttps://peaceformeandtheworld.ning.com/profile/RavishankarG

Dear all,

Question: “Today’s society seems to be in a very bad condition as never seen before. What is the reason for this?”

Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:

“It is only men who form the Society. Today, individual discipline has become a big question mark. Therefore, society will also be indisciplined only.

Responsible parents bring up their children in a disciplined way. They do not like their children reading unwanted, useless books or view such scenes. They also behave in an exemplifying manner. When the child prepares for examination they behave in the most responsible way and take care to avoid any disturbance to him/her. However, such precautions are restricted to the home only. Is that not so? What is the child’s position in the society?

One can say that there is no book or magazine in today’s society that does not have matters, which pull the mind very easily to obscene features. Such subjects are found in television, cinema and also in the websites on the internet. On the one side they carry such obnoxious scenes and write ups instigating lust in youth while on the other side they also carry advertisements, ‘Do not give birth to children’.

On the side are scenes, news that instigate violence and on the other side broadcast against such violence! News items that create fear are published, as they are sensational. Those who read such news items lose their hold in life and become mentally sick. The mind of man can be easily corrupted. It is the responsibility of the Government to keep it healthy.

In today’s circumstances man does not adhere to Scriptures; as also to Government’s rules and regulations.

Do you know the reason for repeated narration of Ramayana, Mahabharata and such other Holy Texts in days past?

Only on listening to these epics time and again would one feel that one should not speak lies or move away from dharma even under the most difficult circumstances. Then the society would also be disciplined. The bad condition in present day is only because of today’s state of affairs.”

A hen lays her eggs and sits on it to hatch it. By the touch of the hen the egg is hatched and the chickens come out of the eggs. Likewise, the Guru touches his disciples and this activates the spiritual fervour in them.

Many young boys used to visit Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Suddenly these young boys would stop visiting him. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa would feel disturbed and when the boys visited him after a gap would question them, 'why have you not come here for a long time?'

The young boys would explain, 'our elders at home do not like our visiting you. They say that by visiting you our studies would be spoilt. They refuse to permit us to come here.’

Sri Ramakrishna would tell the boys to somehow bring the elders at home - the parents or uncle or whoever it was who tried to stop the young ones from visiting him - to him. When those elders came to him, he would touch them while speaking to them. This touch would change their attitude and they would begin to visit Sri Ramakrishna! This is 'hasta diksha' (initiation by touch).

The fish lays its eggs in the water and keeps moving hither and thither in the water. But, the fish keeps looking at the eggs laid. Though the very gaze of the fish the eggs are hatched. This is 'chakshu diksha' (initiation by look). The Guru looks at his disciple and this triggers off the spiritual fervour in him.

Paul Brunton came to the presence of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi at the advice of Maha Periyava. He had a number of questions to be placed before Bhagavan. Bhagavan said to him that he would meet him in his room.

Bhagavan went as promised and sat gazing at Paul Bruton. At the end of it, Bhagavan asked him, ‘you wish to place some questions before me. What are those questions?’

Paul Brunton said, "No! The need to question does not arise. All my questions have been answered." Such is the gaze of the Guru.

A tortoise lays its eggs on land and moves over to the water. Staying in water, its thoughts rest on the eggs laid on the land. By the constant thought of the eggs by the tortoise the eggs get hatched. Similarly, the Guru thinks of his disciple and this takes the disciple higher in his spiritual path.

One who has fallen into the gaze of the Guru has no escape just as a goat on which the mark of the Tiger's teeth has been made.

Dear Friends,

May the grace of Gurudev Swami Sivananda illumine the New Year, with brightness and radiance of hope, aspiration and inspiration.

At the dawn of this New Year, I wish to remind you of Gurudev's message of Divine Life. Live a life of selflessness and service unto all beings. Worship God with devotion and develop Divine Love.

Meditate upon the Supreme Being regularly each day without fail. Ever aspire to realise the Eternal Reality through right enquiry, discrimination, metaphysical reflection and spiritual contemplation. Strive to lead a pure life of noble conduct and holiness in thought, word and deed. Become a servant of humanity, a messenger of Peace and Unity.

Develop vision of One in the spirit of unity. Practise the presence of the Divine and dedicate all the actions to the Lord. Start living this Divine Life today. This year will see the certain come down of an era. Mankind is looking forward to the transition with great expectation and at the same time with some degree of anxious trepidation.

When the year is about to conclude soon to welcome the advent of the New year, we find ourselves in a world split into numerous warring camps and rent with enmity, hostility, hatred and violent, destructive behavior on the part of individuals as well as groups of persons in clash and conflict with others. Today more than ever in human history, the positive process of spreading goodwill, love and friendliness has become imperative and urgent too.

I have always thought of religion as the only unifying and binding force that can bring together mankind in the fraternal bond of spiritual oneness. Because, amidst all the outward diversities and apparent differences that exist on the surface, deep within each and every one of us, there abides one identical principle that forms the innermost core-reality. This is the same in all beings.

For this reason, spirituality which is the inner divine dimension of religion, in the sense of theology, dogma and ritual, becomes an enduring foundation of universal brotherhood and human solidarity. It is upon this foundation that we have to raise the edifice of a New Humanity for the 21st Century. We have all to work for this.

All our shared work and united efforts should be positive, constructive, creative and above all unifying. As a result, there must emerge a Global Human family with planet earth as its home. May this then be our priority task, which will make all other tasks worthwhile and meaningful. Come, come play your active part in this universal human mission. Exercise the blessed privilege of being an individual Human Family.

May your being and doing be a blessing upon the contemporary scene. World peace is possible when people of the world wake up to the facts governing Universal life and when there is heart-to-heart feeling of goodness, love and the one-ness among the inhabitants of the world.

I have a request to one and all who read these lines. If you devote one hour every day in meditation, to the projection of peace thoughts, there will be thousands of people doing the same thing every day and the effect of total effort of such auspicious, combined thought projection is inestimable. Not only will there be individual force of every such dedicated person acting in cooperation, but the additional strength received from Invisible Helpers, the ever present Masters, the Videhas, who will silently guide all and make them pursue the right path. They are the Great Beings who enter into the intellect and emotions of every good and pious person and use him as an instrument for serving mankind.

Our ancients had this sublime and vibrant concern for Peace. Peace was ever in their heart and mind for all creation. They lifted up their hearts to the universal spirit and sent forth their prayerful invocation on behalf of all existence thus.

"May peace be unto all the quarters! May peace be unto the skies! May peace be unto the earth! May peace be to the waters of the earth! May peace be to the medicinal herbs and all plants on earth! May peace be to the celestials! May peace be to Brahma, the Creator! May peace be upon Peace itself!"

Will you not therefore, make now this New year resolve of devoting at least one hour every day to project thoughts of peace, so that the present troubles and turmoils of the world may cease? This is a very simple thing that you can do—yet the response from the Almighty and His Agents will be of great value.

Make your own individual appeal to God and ask Him to send you Light, to help humanity for the establishment of peace and promotion of happiness.

I wish you Happy Christmas. May Lord bless you all with a happy new year of peace, plenty and spiritual evolution.

Om Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram
Om Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram
Om Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram
Devotion to Guru (Bhakti) - Part 5 By Sri Sri Muralidhara swamijitag:peaceformeandtheworld.ning.com,2012-12-09:5143044:BlogPost:1923922012-12-09T02:30:00.000ZRavishankar.Ghttps://peaceformeandtheworld.ning.com/profile/RavishankarG

Let us say that on the compound wall of our house some dirty posters have been pasted. What should we do to stop this? We should paste a poster reading, 'do not paste any poster on this wall.' This would stop further pasting of posters. Thus, by listening to Lord's qualities, Life histories of great devotees, Vedic sounds, sound of the Divine Names unwanted thoughts are erased out and new ones do not crop up. All our Desire, Anger are wiped out. Listening to histories of great devotees is greater than even listening to Lord's stories.

Nature is the mother and Lord the father. Nature (Prakriti), the mother, slaps us across the face harshly and it is then that we run to the Father, the Lord!

You cannot comprehend Lord with your Intellect. When you are totally ignorant to what is happening beyond these walls, what is going to happen tomorrow and what had happened some 30/40 years back how can you think of comprehending Lord with your Intellect?

It is like trying to see the Sunlight with the help of the moonlight when the reality is that the Moon has no light of its own but it is only the reflected light of the Sun. It is only through the association of Sadhus can you earn devotion . Sages are the hands of the Lord. Just as we pick up things with the hands, Lord pulls us unto Himself using Sages as His hands. Never sever your association with Sadhus.

One should get under the wings of a Guru. But, do not go out in search of a Guru. You will not be able to attain a Sadguru (True Guru) through your own effort. It is not easy to identify a Sadguru.

Then what am I to do?

You say that one should embrace a Sadguru to attain Lord and you also say that one cannot easily identify a Sadguru. Then what is the way out?

Keep praying to Lord sincerely. If you have deep yearning to attain Lord, Lord himself will send a Sadguru to you. This is certain.

There are three kinds of 'diksha' (initiation). Initiation by touch, initiation by sight and initiation by thought.

Ramana Maharishi also speaks of these three 'dikshas' in his 'Aksharamanamalai'.(Hundred and Eight Verses to Sri Arunachala in South Indian Tamil Language- http://youtu.be/r6qfW560RLA)

The rope that he drops for us to take hold of is verily the path of Namasankirtan (taking the Divine Name of the Lord). It has the trademark of innumerable saints who have followed this path. If the Guru says wear green or red cloth you may doubt. But, this is the path shown by innumerable Mahans (Saints).

What Path does a Sadguru show?

He shows the Path that Mahans such as Mira, Thiagaraja, Badrachala Ramdas, Azhwars, Nayanmars, the devotees of Pandaripur (Maharashtra state West of India) like Namdev, Tukkaram have all shown; and they have all taken the path as shown by the Scriptures.

A true Guru shows the path taken by such great devotees. Namasankirtanam is a very easy path. Do not think, I do not know to sing. I do not possess melodious voice. I have no knowledge of 'ragas'. Just utter 'Ra'-'Ma'. It is also verily Namasankirtan. That is all to it.

But, people are always in awe of arduous ways. This is the reason for their indifference to this easy Path. The banyan tree which is hundreds / thousands of years old. If we desire to bring it down we bring bulldozers and such big machines. With great difficulty we try to bring it down. Instead, if we get some termites to the tree they gradually multiply in crores, eat away the wood and thus bring the deep-rooted huge tree down easily.

Rama Nam is verily this termite that can easily, gradually eat away the kama, krodha, moha within you and make you pure! Yogabhyasa (Practice of Yoga), karmas, Vedanta vichara (Enquiry) are like the big bulldozer.

When the Guru gives you 'initiation' of the Divine Name, He bestows His Penance (tapas) along with it.

We may question, 'why can't I meditate on the clock on the wall or on the black dot on the wall?'

Sound has power. Food and water affect our body. Alcohol affects our body. The five elements - fire in our body digests the food that we take. If we drink contaminated water it affects the body health. If unhealthy food is eaten we suffer from food poison. All the five elements are found in our body - fire, water, earth, air and space. Space does not mean the sky seen on the outside but there is space within our body, too. There is space between the liver and another part of our body. There is space between the different parts of our body. This space is affected by the sound that is heard.

Just as unhygienic drink or food affects our system so does unhealthy sounds (in the form of vulgar songs, speeches) affect our system both physically and mentally. Just as medicines prescribed by a doctor cure us of the infection from impure water and food so do the sound of the Vedas, Divine Name of the Lord purifies the space within, which has been infected with impure sounds.

!!!
