We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.
Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

It's not all in your head. It's all in your heart. It's all in your feet. It's all in your shoulders. It's all in your breath. It's all in your body. Anything unattended to, unresolved, unhealed and unprocessed lives in your tissues, your cells, your musculature. It may be manifest in your anxious thinking, but it doesn't begin there. The mind does not source it - the body does. The trick is not to try to shift the thinking from the mind itself. You can't. You may be able to subdue it there, but you won't be able to resolve it. Because the troubling thoughts are merely a symptom of the deeper issues. They are a reflection of our emotional holdings and constricted musculature. They emanate from the fleshy tunnels that we dug in order to survive this world.

To sing means to use the soul-voice. It means to say on the breath the truth of one's power and one's need, to breathe soul over the thing that is ailing or in need of restoration. This is done by descending into the deepest mood of great love and feeling, till one's desire for relationship with the wildish Self overflows, then to speak one's soul from that frame of mind. That is singing over the bones.

Obviously, it will take me some time before I can allow the tree to be sad!
Truly wise decision, dear Luna!
But that picture shows a real unhappy tree!
I can't help but wonder why!
I want to tell him to smile, instead...

When you go out into the woods and you look at trees, you see all these different trees. And some of them are bent, and some of them are straight, and some of them are evergreens, and some of them are whatever. And you look at the tree and you allow it. You see why it is the way it is. You sort of understand that it didn’t get enough light, and so it turned out that way. And you don’t get all emotional about it. You just allow it. You appreciate the tree. The minute you get near humans, you lose all that. And you are constantly saying, ‘You’re too this, or I’m too this.’ That judging mind comes in. And so I practice turning people into trees. Which means appreciating them just the way they are.

SO TRUE, INDEED!
Loneliness is not one of the greatest disorders of the soul, but the fear of loneliness is. We are all lonely, even when amid crowds and in committed relationships. When we are alone, we are still with someone; we are with ourselves. The question is, how are we with ourselves? Those who manage to find respect for themselves, who learn to dialogue with themselves, who find that their dreams and other such phenomena are communicating with them from some deeper place within them are not really alone.
James Hollis
