Nelson Mandela national hero of South Africa, a political icon worldwide, was 95 years old.
Nelson Mandela, his life and legacy, has dominated social media conversation since the former president died on Thursday.
South African President Jacob Zuma formally announced the death at 23:45 local time (21:45 GMT), in a news conference.
But during the 60 seconds leading up to the historic announcement, there was intense speculation and emotion on display on Twitter.
