Water Filter Project for Tibetan Refugees in Mainpat, India - Summer 2012.

Water Filter Project for Tibetan Refugees in Mainpat, India - Summer 2012.

This Summer we have our water filter project in Mainpat. The fundraising is still going on now and we willraise money until the 15th of June 2012. All donations are still welcome until that date.

Mainpat is situated in Central India and it's one of the poorest Tibetan refugee camps in India. It was the first Tibetan settlement that was established by the government of India in 1962, to rehabilitate 1,400 Tibetan refugees who went to India in the aftermath of the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959. It  is very remote, the nearest town is Ambikapur which is situated 50 km from Mainpat. The condition of the roads is very bad, and it takes about one hour and a half to two hours by car.

Mainpat has many problems because of the impurity of the water. This is partly due to the bauxite mining in the region that has affected the purity of groundwater , and to the annual monsoon rains that last a long time which causes diseases like malaria. Special water filters purify the water of all bacteria and they are completely ecological, without the use of chemicals. All the money raised for this project goes entirely, 100%, to the purchase of water filters.

The price of one water filter is 50 euro (70 US Dollar) but all donations are welcome.

Until the 15 th of June, you can donate any amount using the following methods  -

Bank Transfer to our (Belgian) bank  Account BE25 9795 9253 2282 (the BIC-code is: ARSPBE22). Please mention “Water filter project 2012”.

PayPal  using the  e-mail address dennis.barbion@telenet.be

A donation using Western Union is also possible, but please contact us first for that.

Dennis Barbion, president of Tibetaanse-Vlaamse Vriendenkring, is going to India this Summer, to buy and install the water filters for the Tibetan families in Mainpat who don’t have a water filter yet. We hope to help as many people as possible in this way.

For this project we work closely together with the Phendeling Tibetan Settlement Office, the office of the Tibetan government in exile in Mainpat, and with Mr. Chime Youngdung, president of the National Democratic Party of Tibet (NDPT) that is based in Dharamsala. The NDPT is not only a Tibetan political party in India, but an NGO,  a non-governmental organization , as well. The president, Mr. Chime Youngdung, is our local representative, and as  he is from Mainpat, he knows the situation very well. He is going to accompany and help Dennis Barbion on his trip to Mainpat.

We ask the people who give a donation, to let us know their email address, so that we can keep them informed about the further planning and development of our projects. We are also going to email a full report of the water filter project to all the sponsors afterwards.

With our hearty thanks to all the sponsors!
