II: 40

[Krishna Jaya]

Chapter 2, Verse 40

 

 "On this path, no effort is wasted.

No gain is ever lost.

Even a little of this practice

Will shelter you from fear." 

 

Paramahansa Yogananda:

 

"In the material world, success is measured by tangible, though often short-lasting, results.  On the spiritual path, results being primarily psychological are often intangible.  They are real, nonetheless, and everlastingly beneficial.  Spiritual success begins as subtle transformations in the consciousness of the inner being.  They are to be measured according to their peace-giving qualities.  When devotees meditate deeply, they are bound to feel an ever-increasing peace, more precious than any worldly possession.  To maintain that peace within, in spite of the ever-changing circumstances of life, is to be happier than a king, who, amid outwardly favorable circumstances, is often inwardly miserable and fearful."

 

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi:

 

"Self-realization cannot become actualized unless people give themselves completely to the process.  In order to be able to give themselves completely to it, they have to know two things: first, that it is within their power to accomplish, and secondly, that its accomplishment will be of everlasting benefit to them and to the world.  This is why Krishna speaks the words of this verse.  Arjuna is being prepared for the direct experience of reality which will dissolve all doubt while bringing stability and abiding joy to his life."                                 

 

Sri Aurobindo:

 

“Arjuna is seized with the great fear which besieges humanity, its fear of sin and suffering now and hereafter, its fear about a world of whose true nature it is ignorant, of God who true being also it has not seen and whose cosmic purpose it does not understand.  My yoga, says the divine teacher, will deliver you fear.  When you have once set out on this path, you will find that no step is lost; every least movement will be a gain.  This is a bold and resolute promise and one to which the fearful and hesitating mind, beset and stumbling in its many wanderings, cannot easily lend an assured trust.”
