"Little Rabbit, be good"

A Chinese Youtube video exercises protest

The Internet proves to be in China again and again as a medium of protest: The animated film "Little Rabbit, be good" of the artist Wang Bo exercises clearly criticizing the regime. Without further ado, the film was removed from the Chinese network. On Youtube it's still too see.

Wang Bo says of himself that he was a pessimist. But that is no reason not to welcome the new year. 2011 - Year of the Rabbit - sent the cartoon animator its customers a creative gift. And the short film "Be good, little rabbit" has it all: innocent rabbit babies die of a cruel death on toxic milk. Mighty Tiger drive the poor long-eared forcibly from their homes. The parallels to the milk powder scandal and the millions of expropriation in China are obvious.

Gone through self-censorship? "In a good country must be allowed to complain to a certain extent, relieve a little pressure," said Wang Bo. "This is the sign of a mature state. And the state will slowly mature." That would be an optimistic view of the new year. In his film sees the end is different: the patient hare was the last straw. They attack the Tigers band and cause a bloodbath. This has a very clear threat uploaded by Wang Bo's customers in the Chinese Internet. 130 000 Chinese saw the movie before he disappeared - probably out of self-censorship of the Internet service provider. Actually, the year of the rabbit in China as a particularly peaceful will be welcomed. The animal in the Chinese horoscope is as gentle and patient. But the stars are probably not correct. Although China's economy is booming, undaunted, while rising inflation and hence the resentment among the poor, who already feel as victims of government policy.

Hu Xingdou, economics professor at the Technical University in Beijing, said: "In some places, is the largest conflict in China - between the government and people - in the meantime so sharp enough that a small incident could to cause great social unrest if such. riots could spread, which lead to chaos throughout the country, as currently in Egypt. " What China should do now is to award the people more rights to open sources of information, giving people the opportunity to complain.

Complaints almost always without succes. One such place is the Appeals Board in Beijing. The Authority will act as an outlet for malcontents. From around the country they come here, complain about unfair court decisions, corruption and violence in the provinces - but almost always without success. Premier Wen Jiabao has recognized the signs of the times. As the first Prime Minister, he visited the Board office a visit and urged the population to, to criticize the government. The petitioners, however, believe a word of it, as Cao Qingnianaus Shandong. "We come to Beijing to ask the central government for help, but do not receive us again," he says. "Instead, they notify the local governments. The catch us and send us back home."

A few years ago was allowed to criticize abuses in China at all about the action. Meanwhile, the expanded scope, but still is: Who is the rule of the Communist party in question must be censorship, threats, or face even jail. Wang Bo and his staff have already made commercials for the state family planning. That he be clear about rabbit film could still cause trouble, he does not believe.

"I have not done anything wrong," says Wang. "Maybe I'm not entirely correct, but certainly I have not made any mistakes. I simply expressed what they have seen other people also, or just curious. Why should I be afraid?" Finally, it is said Wang Bo, everybody knows that rabbits bite if they are pushed around too much. The say they have to be a pessimist. A rabbit heart, however, should not have too.
