A common space for harmonic peacemakers
Madonna della Pace by Pinturicchio (1490)
Sweet Sign
Staring at our planet as it bursts into flames
more threats of war spread out across the day
intermittent gasps of who why how where
which power is responsible for this latest contest in barbarity?
Bursting open a tangerine on New Year’s Eve
reminded of the sweetness of life;
how quickly it disappears in a flash
of beginnings that never evolve to conclusive points.
I eat greedily the juice somehow restoring my thirst for all of it.
When I hold up a fragile circle of light to the goddess of peace
all I can do is hope for a better world because I can’t pray
only reach out to those who ask for sustenance and mercy
put on my armor of light, stand against the winds
that howl outside offer my shelter from the storm
and a place to eat tangerines together
as human beings that still breathe and will fight
this endless needless greedy circle of fire.
