excerpt "Sensing Shades of Reality"

August 17th Errors of Generosity

In a true act of enlightened generosity, the doer, the action, and the receiver are perceived as equally and naturally empty of inherent existence. However, with only an intellectual understanding regarding the non-inherent existence of these three elements of higher generosity, one will spontaneously use a false (though genuine to them) realization that is unaligned with awakening procedures. Although they might gain some beneficial realizations, their thought processes are, in essence, only educational realizations that actually cause additional stress.

When making efforts to practice bodhisattva type generosity, it would be an error (based in misguided altruism) to believe that you are not real, the action is not real, but the recipient is. Another iteration of this error would be believing that neither you nor the receiver are real, but the action of giving is real. Those who hold the latter belief have conceived an erroneous view that lacks the marks of reality and therefore cannot be a transcendent view, even though action is more subtle than the dense forms of people.

Lastly, the one who affirms that the action and receiver are illusory, and only I am real is emphasizing “I” as the important element. With this blazingly poor attitude, it is obvious that acts of “generosity” are only performed to enhance and improve their personal status or power. At least one of these four faults of confusion are always found in those who struggle with spiritual philosophy before wisdom has fully developed.
