Afzal Shauq Is A Poet Of Peace..//..Dr. Antony Theodore

Afzal Shauq is a poet of peace. His vociferous attack on war. His critical view on greed of human beings.. and his repeated saying “ a friendly smile is the best weapon. We shall fight the war minded politicians with a smile. Sometimes it looks like he is naïve when he speaks about the smile against war.

“We are brutal animals. We are like vultures and crocodiles”. We are cousins and sons and daughters of Adam referring to Holy
Bible and Holy Quran. Very religious minded but down to earth in seeing the realities as they are.

While writing about girls he becomes emotional as in ‘crazy girl’.

Prostitutes dance for money and they sing songs of love to lure men. About unfaithfulness he moans: “Cruel is my fate. She is with another not with me Your smiles wrap me in my daydreams. I feel I am part of your dreams while your smiles are soul tingling as I see with my open eyes.

A human being becomes a human being because of his acts of kindness and that is the greatness.

Gods of money hover around. They are ever present with selfish attitudes and manipulative methods. Afzal compares such greedy Gods with human beings who are condemned to live in mud houses and says the poor are better human beings than the money Gods.

“the poor are dry wood, trying to light the darkness”.

Afzal Shauq speaks of the inner experience of his inner self. It is a mystical experience. A real poet has to be a mystic and a philosopher. I am not the one whom I think that I am. I am more than that. I have a soul and I can see the face of God in my inner self.

We are free human beings. But we are treated like criminals, imprisoned for crimes not of our commission. They steal away our freedom.

He is exhorting the mountain children not to keep quite. The time has come to end this silence. Sound out like mountain shepherds returning with their folk.

You are not animals that have no sense. You deserve a better life. Get up Shauq. Turn on their lights. For darkness has come to the houses of Pashtoons.

Tear down those walls that separate us and heal our nations. Start preparing the world for a better tomorrow. Create a land where we can stand shoulder to shoulder in peace and harmony.

He cries over the present situation in which he looses courage and tells: I surrendered my dreams and feelings. One by one they fell like defeated soldiers.

The time has come. There is the growing need for a new justice. Mankind should get freed from all the demigods of money. Like the dry desert his heart yearns for this justice and love and a smile for which his heart craves for.

Afzal Shauq is a prophet of peace, a philosopher who spreads the message of smile and love. A poet who cries over injustice in the world and criticizes all that is evil in the society. He is a good soul poet. Wish him many more years so that he may write more and more poems of peace and love.
