A common space for harmonic peacemakers
Afzal Shauq Is An Artist Of Reality.
“If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can even warm me, I know that is poetry.”
Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)
I think you will ask why I have started this article with that quote. The answer is very simple: Emily Dickinson’s words suit perfect to my attitude towards Afzal Shauq’s poetry. “Image Of Hate” was the first poem I read. And my blood ran cold. It’s hard to believe but I was scared. I saw myself…
When we are in a rage we can’t see our souls, we don’t care of the consequents. Our fury hides the real world from us. When we calm we don’t open our eyes to the truth. We only prefer not to think about that small accident… We lay a ghost.
This poem made me remember myself in a rage. I recollected all my thoughts and feelings. And that wave flattened me. It broke all my fallacious peace of my unruffled calm. I was ashamed of my thoughts.
But we can’t live without rage. It gives us some kind of relief, a fleeting sense of freedom. That’s why we sip it every day. And everyone makes his own choice^ what type of fury he prefers today.
Isn’t it a power of poetry? How could few lines of words such shock me? – this is only the author’s skill.
Afzal Shauq got into shape the eternal human’s impressions. But he didn’t tell us the whole truth. He left us an opportunity to make our own conclusion. Work out something by ourselves.
As you know the idea, which you created by yourself, is more valuable than somebody else's. and it doesn’t matter that only one hundredth is yours. You take part in salvation of the eternal questions.
So there are some reason why I like his poetry and advice you to read it:
1. all Afzal Shauq’s poems are heartfelt. He lets through all the masks for the world and gives us an essence. And under the cover of the daily life we find the truth. So he doesn’t only describe his own feelings or points of view. He shares with us his experience. For example the poem ”Voice Of The Face”.
2. His poetry makes reader thinking and analyzing because Afzal Shauq writes about the world-wide things and events: war (“War”, ” War For The Sake Of God” (In Context with Afghan Civil War)), people’s indifference (“What happened to you?”), de-individuation not only for man, but for the whole nations (“Strange Globalization”).
“All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual”.
Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
3. I think, they are like portrait sketch of the mankind and of a man separately. For example “Tragedy of 21st century” or “A New Dawn”. This poem tells us in metaphor about modern problems: an approach to life, contemporary system of values. You can even find there a forecast for future for our society. It isn’t optimistic but it’s veracious. As for me I share his opinion. History knows a lot of examples of such phenomenon when great civilization lost their ways in lust and self-adoration: Sodom and Gomorrah, Rome, Maya. So don’t forget who you are.
Thank you.
