Air pollution causes the development of asthma in adults

Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways. Is accompanied by a permanent hypersensitivity before a large number of stimuli and attacked with respiratory failure.

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children , but adults can also develop this disease. The suspended particles emitted by traffic are particularly hazardous to human health as it related to the development of asthma in nonsmokers.

The study was conducted in Switzerland between 1991 and 2002 , as part of the study were selected SAPALDIA of a total of 2725 non-smokers , aged between 16 and 60 years .

During this period , 41 people from a total of 2725 (1.5% of those examined ) have developed this disease without being smoked. This is the news presented by SAPALDIA cohort study published in the journal Thorax.

HEAVY TRAFFIC

The 41 cases of asthma are not randomly distributed by the Swiss geography , but which manifested itself most often in areas with heavy traffic roads .

In places where the traffic load decreased, also reduced the risk of developing asthma. Dr. Nino Künzli , researcher at the Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology ( CREAL) and the Municipal Institute of Medical Research ( IMIM ), lead author and professor recently recruited to the department of social and preventive medicine at the University of Basel , says :

"Our results contribute to the debate on urban planning as to what types of buildings and the distance from heavy traffic roads to be built . "

According to Künzli , the only such legislation that exists so far? ? in California can not build new schools within 300 meters of motorways, consistent with the findings of his study.

Between 1991 and 2002 , in Switzerland , the average air pollution by particulate matter from traffic has been reduced from 2.84 to 2.25 micrograms per m3. Referring to this, the reduction of pollution in urban areas such as Basel or Geneva was higher than in rural areas such as Davos and Montana, where in 1991 the air and was clean.

Although the reduction of pollutant emissions is good news , keep recurring cases of people developing asthma.

"Reason enough to only sell vehicles with little or no emission of pollutants , "says Künzli .

The researchers limited their studies to people who had never been smokers . snuff smoke contains essentially the same pollutants produced by traffic, but in higher concentrations .

For this reason , in the case of smokers , although not exposed to air pollution , the risk of developing asthma is greatest. (Source : SINC )
