Genuine humility is strength, not weakness as some people believe. Why is this? Humility comes about when we reduce our ego. Not reducing our ego due to insecurity or self-doubt but reducing through understanding the disadvantages of arrogance. This leads to courage as we reduce ego clinging and become more focused on concern for the welfare of others. As we focus less on ourselves, we engage in action to right injustice. This is catalyzed by our newfound courage. Ego and concern for the welfare of others are like a teeter totter. When one goes down the other goes up. As ego goes down, concern for the welfare of others goes up. You might think, “what about me?!” It may be counter intuitive, but as we focus more on others’ welfare, our own welfare increases dramatically. Our own joy increases. Our own sense of a meaningful life increases. Emaho!
