Today, December 4th, is St. Barbara's Day
Today, December 4th, is St. Barbara's Day. In the old faith, it is a very special day. While nature outside lies in deep sleep, we bring a promise of spring into our homes.
According to old legends, the Berchten branches bloomed on Christmas Day, during the holy time of the winter solstice. This legendary blooming is a reminder of the ancient beliefs of our ancestors. The Berchten branches, which served as models for the St. Barbara and St. Lucy branches, were placed on a fence post on Christmas Eve, a time when the elements, the wind spirits, were also offered fodder and ears of grain.
The anticipation of the winter solstice, after which nature, with the lengthening of the days, regains its strength. During this time, the symbolism of greening plants played a significant role—the St. Barbara branches, formerly the Berchten branches, and many others.
