No Hiding Place

In the search for spiritual truth, there’s no room for hiding. Anything that stands in the way of true fulfilment must eventually come into the light. We all carry within us emotional forces that shape our perception of life. These are the deep, subconscious entities that influence our lives from the shadows.

Negative forces, or the darker aspects of the self, often remain undetected beneath the surface of everyday awareness. These energies – resentment, anger, fear – permeate our emotional bodies, shaping our responses and interactions, often without us even realising it. But when we begin to observe our inner workings, particularly through the lens of spiritual practice, these forces become clearer.

The process of transforming emotional pain to original love is no easy task. Often, these emotional wounds have been carried for years, sometimes for a lifetime. They might seem small at first, like fleeting feelings or passing thoughts, but their presence can cause tension, discomfort, and confusion in our outer lives. A miscommunication in a relationship, an uncomfortable situation at work, or even the seemingly trivial irritations encountered in our daily routine all reflect the inner disturbances yet to be resolved. The emotional body – the energetic body behind the physical form – holds onto these pains, creating an emotional structure that can sometimes be as solid as the physical body itself. These psychic scars are not confined to the material world; they are energetic imprints that continue to influence our thoughts, emotions, and actions. It is through deep awareness and stillness that these layers of self can begin to dissolve and lessen its grip.

Self-enquiry is the act of turning inward to observe both our emotional responses and the external circumstances that trigger them. By examining both, it’s possible to gain a clearer picture of our inner life and how it is mirrored in the world around us. ‘As within, so without’ as the saying goes. Our outer world is often a reflection of the emotional and psychic conditions carried within. This process requires great honesty. To face what’s uncomfortable or hidden within can be daunting. Yet it’s through this deep honesty that we can begin to see where change is needed. Whether it’s in relationships, work, or even our personal habits, the external world often provides valuable clues to the internal state.

At the heart of spiritual transformation is the process of unveiling the self. At first, this may seem a dark and confusing journey as the deeper parts of our psyche are still hidden in the shadows. But with perseverance, the darkness gives way to clarity. As we continue the practice of self-observation, the emotional body begins to break down and our immortal essence shines through.

In the inner process there are two distinct levels of perception. The first is that it is dark with an absence of starlight. Within the dark the psychic self is able to manipulate the inner space because this part of the psyche is still an aspect of unresolved past. As someone perseveres in mastering the wandering habits of the mind, the inner stillness penetrates the core of self within the body of emotional pain. This has the effect of breaking down the psychic structures surrounding the core, which accounts for the often tumultuous suffering in the spiritual process.

As the process unfolds, we can begin to perceive the ‘black’, the pure energy of life and death. On reaching this stage there is no longer room for the false self to hide. This immediacy of perception is not conditioned by the dualities of light and darkness. In this sacred space the insidious demon of the underworld is finally exposed. The twilight of the subconscious then becomes illuminated with love, the essence of the black. This is not the light generated by any external source, but the uncorrupted radiance of the eternal spiritual being.
