The Mermaids of the Karoo (or Watermeide) are mythical, dark-haired, fish-tailed water spirits from South African folklore, believed to inhabit deep pools and gorges—particularly in Meiringspoort—within the arid Klein Karoo. Known as, or sometimes associated with, dangerous, moody, and enchanting entities, they are said to control water, bringing either life-giving rain or destructive, deadly floods, and are often blamed for drawing unsuspecting passersby into watery graves.
