My sister is a lay practitioner of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Four years ago I was betwixt and between, "awaiting further orders," and sis saw a job opening at the Karma Kagyu retreat center in the Catskills of upstate New York. They were looking for a cook for the three and a half year men's retreat (no days off!). I went there and stayed for ten days and had the job if I wanted it, but I realized it was too much for someone with such limited kitchen experience as me. I ended up on the North Coast of California working in a group home for six developmentally disabled guys which turned out to be just what the Doctor ordered.
