I Speak of Palestine
I speak of your insistence
on believing what you’re told
to be so blind:
you must have learned
what not to know
to be so cold that you can say
“These people do belong
inside this tomb.”
They cannot move
or live
or eat
And, yes,
I speak of Palestine.
You cannot hold
its fate is just
and not be part
of grinding up
their bones and blood
to mix with desert earth
and olive oil
to build your state, your jail;
a wall surrounds
their place, like this:
a torture room
a starving field
a stolen home
a human shield
a bullet for a child
and poison gas on village streets
their food, their food!
Their food is gone
you cleanse
and push
and punish
taking what you want
to have for you alone.
We know it’s rape,
and though the world records
your names and deeds,
the future courts and trials
will not revive
the dead, displaced and missing.
And yes, I speak of Palestine.

Beit Sira (بيت سيرا), watercolors on paper, ١٩٨٤.

Beit Sira is a Palestinian village, located west of Ramallah and is a part of the Ramallah and al-Bireh Governorate. The village is situated along the Green Line. During the Nakba in 1948, around 4,000 dunams of its land became a part of the "No-Man's Land" strip between the north-central West Bank and Israel. Israel has confiscated around 1,500 dunams of land from Beit Sira for the construction of the Israeli settlement of Maccabim, presently part of Modi'in-Maccabim-Re'ut.

بيت سيرا هي قرية فلسطينية تقع غربي مدينة رام الله وهي جزء من محافظة رام الله والبيرة. تقع القرية على طول الخط الأخضر. خلال النكبة عام 1948 ، أصبح حوالي 4000 دونم من أراضيها جزءًا من "الأرض المحرمة" بين شمال وسط الضفة الغربية وإسرائيل. صادرت إسرائيل حوالي 1500 دونم من الأراضي من بيت سيرا لبناء مستوطنة مكابيم الإسرائيلية ، وهي حالياً جزء من موديعين - مكابيم - راعوث.

Al-Jeeb village (قرية الجيب), oil on canvas, 1981.

Al-Jib is a Palestinian village located to the northwest of the city of Jerusalem. The village is located on the site of the city of Gibeon, which means a hill. It is a major city for a Canaanite tribe. In the village there are archaeological sites, including rooms carved in the rock, a church, and burials. The occupation authorities established on its lands the settlement of "Givat Ze'ev" in 1977 after confiscating 2,246 dunams. It also confiscated other lands to build the separation wall and to expand the Givon settlement.

الجيب قرية فلسطينية تقع إلى الشمال الغربي من مدينة القدس، تقوم القرية على موقع مدينة (جبعون) وتعني تل، وهي مدينة رئيسية لقبيلة الحويين الكنعانية. يوجد في القرية مواقع أثرية منها الغرف المحفورة في الصخر، وكنيسة، ومدافن. أقامت سلطات الاحتلال على أراضيها مستوطنة "جفعات زئيف" في عام 1977 بعد مصادرة 2246 دونمًا. كما صادرت أراض أخرى لبناء الجدار العازل وكذلك لتوسيع مستوطنة جفعون
