The Cailleach
Off into the wild woods I did go
Far, far away. O’er there to where the old lady does dwell, she be the watcher of Winter, the keeper of sticks, the Cailleach Some call her the old hag and do say she roams endlessly o’er the wild and barren land during Winter time.
Calling out her name as I go, for I knew she was near, I knew she was here And as I did, a bright ray of sunshine came shining down upon an old decayed tree trunk.
Why, as the glorious sun did shine down, celestial magic was in the air and surely a sign that Spring shall be kind and fair
In gratitude for such a blessing I left the old Cailleach an offering of sticks I had found scattered upon the ground.
And I thanked her for minding over the land and all things wild They do say, on May Day she casts her staff under a Holly bush and turns to stone, where she does rest until the end of Summer
