Event Description

On 16 March 2011 peaceful protests in the Ngaba area of eastern Tibet were violently suppressed by the Chinese authorities. Protests started when a young monk named Phuntsok from Kirti Monastery set himself on fire, marking the third anniversary of events in 2008 when at least 10 Tibetans were shot dead after demonstrations began.

In recent days further protests have taken place in Tibet and reports that "dozens of Tibetans" have been detained following protests during which they shouted slogans including "Free Tibet," "Invite Dalai Lama to Tibet" and "Independence for Tibet".

This is happening while the Chinese government are in the midst of the worst crackdown on free speech in at least a decade. With the world’s attention on the uprisings in the Middle East, China is clamping down on lawyers, activists, netizens, and artist, including the well-known Ai Weiwei who has not been seen or heard of since Sunday 3 April
