Jiegu earthquake: Survivors in a food tent at the race track
We have pulled out of Jiegu now. The altitude sickness was badly affecting us. I wanted to put down some quick thoughts about the situation on the ground.
The first thing is that the final death toll will be much higher than the current figure of 1484.…
— Survivors of Wednesday's deadly earthquake in western China's Qinghai provice have begun mass cremations of the dead.
Buddhist tradition says that the dead should be left outside for vultures to eat in a so-called "sky burial", but with so many bodies to dispose of the monks have sanctioned the cremations.
Hopes of finding more survivors are fading and the rescue efforts are turning into a clean-up operation.
